Ceiling, Ceasars Palace, Las Vegas

Don’t forget to look up.

A lot of beauty goes unseen because people are looking where they’re going. Now, generally speaking, this is a sound and eminently practical way to behave. You will avoid stepping into potholes and driving off cliffs, which is desirable. You will probably arrive safely at your destination: good work!

But much of what is beautiful is in the details on the side, in the very small and in the very large, in what is peeking around the corner or way up high. It’s important to let your eye snag on these things, from time to time.

Turn your gaze in a different direction every now and then. It will only slow you down a little bit.
