The sun was shining and although the temperature never got up to 40F, I still determined that I needs must get outside. I went to Mt. Vernon, for only my second visit in 17+ years (and the last time was a cursory view of the Pioneer Farm area).

This time, I marched myself around the grounds and took a tour of the mansion. I chatted with the young men in the relatively new blacksmith’s workshop. I read the placards.

My take-away from the afternoon was simply this: George Washington was filthy rich and a damn good farmer. He managed to take an inheritance of 50 slaves and build to a grand total of 361 at the time of his death. In theory, all his bondsmen were freed by his will. I wonder what actually became of them.
