On being celebrated

It’s my birthday, and I’m fortunate to have friends and family, near and far, who have expressed their affection for me today. Although I don’t generally go for a lot of hoopla and attention, I’ll admit it is nice to have people make a bit of a fuss once a year or so.

I have never been much motivated by ambition or fame, but there have always been people whose good opinion matters a great deal to me. When those folks take the time to tell me that they like my work, that I’ve been helpful in some way, that they are proud of me or glad I was born, it makes my day—heck, it makes my week.

I am blessed in the riches of love.

Happy happy birthday, 2 days past, but is it ever too late? I know you know how happy I am that you are my friend. Helen and I recently got to see “Wicked” at the Kennedy Center (thanks to Alex Tang); to me the most beautiful and poignant song is of course the one that says, “who can say if I’ve been changed for the better? But because I knew you, I have been changed for good.” Let’s find a time to get together again soon.
