Strike A Pose

Butterfly sucking nectar.

This was not an easy photograph to get. You have to picture me precariously leaning way forward, while doing a deep knee-bend, and holding the camera about 2 inches away from the feeding insect.

You’ll also note that the wings are blurred. That’s not just a depth-of-field issue; the wings are fluttering madly the whole time. The shutter speed on the picture is 1/320th of a second (sufficient to stop the motion of an airplane coming straight at you when landing) and that wasn’t enough.

But look at the couture elegance of this creature! The panache! Look at the subtle detail in the white stripe of the fur on the thorax and the white edging of the scallops on the wing, the beaded antenna. Such attention to detail! She even comes with built-in matte-black sunglasses. Swoon!
