Sound Sunset

Sunset with color palette

Let’s break some rules, shall we?

  1. It’s a sunset. Sunsets are big honkin’ clichés. But you know what? I don’t care!
  2. Sunsets are about the sun and the sky. OR NOT. This one is more about the water and the dark weeds in the foreground.
  3. Don’t cut your image in half by putting the horizon dead center. Unless, y’know, it works best that way.
  4. High ISO images are a waste of electrons. Says who? This was shot at ISO 1600 at f4:1/30. There’s some noise, alright. I kinda like it.
  5. A color palette shouldn’t look like “One from columns A-E.” Have a look, though: are these not the colors of a wonderful autumn wardrobe?

The moral of the story is: know the rules, understand why they are the rules, respect the rules enough to know when it’s right to break them, and finally—own your creative choices, but don’t be so stubborn that you can’t admit it when it becomes clear that it wasn’t artistic genius but rather a mistake born of ignorance and/or bloody-minded egotism.
