Water Tower, Greer SC

Water tower from below.

Bob and I spent Monday together. Much of the afternoon was spent walking in Dupont State Recreational Forest, and I have some nice pictures from that outing, but before we got there we made an errand run to Greer, SC.

As we approached our destination, I saw this water tower. I almost declared an aesthetic emergency, but we had a goal to accomplish. (We didn’t, but we tried, and it wasn’t our fault.) On the way out of Greer, I asked Bob to pull over so that I could attempt to photograph the water tower in a way that would explain why it so captivated me. I took 4 images trying to get it right. This was the last. I’m pretty happy with it.

Bamboo Passage

Black & white image of path through bamboo and other trees.

Not in Japan, or indeed anywhere in Asia. Another autumnal Asheville fool-the-eye, this one from the grounds of the Biltmore Estate.

Seasonal Leaves

Fuzzy lamb's ears with water droplets.

Not yet the full spectrum of Fall color. No, now we’re having the quiet slide into the dimmest part of the year. The sun’s down at around seven now. The moon glows brighter in the cooler sky. The dew lingers longer, anticipating the arrival of frost.

Autumn is my favorite season, despite the dying of the light. If only we could have Autumn without the inevitability of Winter. I don’t have a lot of good things to say about the cold, the damp chill, the dark and ice of winter.

I wonder why I find myself awake in the middle of the night, wide awake, despite no fault of caffeine and no untoward anxieties. My cat is a croissant of fur and purr, blissfully oblivious to my wakefulness. I envy him his utterly feline ability to tuck himself in and simply sleep.

Asheville Pride 2014

It was a beautiful day. A lovely, warm-hearted, cheerful, multi-generational, gently eccentric crowd gathered to celebrate together. The one lone counter-protester was surrounded by a compassionate circle of people affirming the primacy of love and equality.

What a lovely variety of humanity.

I’m proud to be an Ashevillian.
